Border Caravans Announced as Headline Sponsor of the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Home Show

The new sponsor will be unveiling the show’s first ever accessible lodge at the show in February alongside Love Holiday Homes

The Scottish Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Home Show is delighted to announce Border Caravans as the new headline sponsor for this year’s event (6-9th February 2025). In an exciting first, the new partner will be unveiling the show’s inaugural accessible lodge, setting a new standard for inclusivity in the industry.

The bespoke accessible lodge, designed in partnership with Love Holiday Homes as a prototype for future builds, showcases a commitment to inclusivity and thoughtful design. Features include wider corridors, rooms, and a balcony with ramped access and sliding internal doors—ensuring a more accessible and comfortable experience for everyone. While accessible lodges have existed within the industry, this marks the first time such an innovative design will be featured at the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome and Holiday Home Show.

Jillyanne Glen, Show Manager at the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome, and Holiday Home Show, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Border Caravans as our headline sponsor. Having collaborated with their team for years, we’ve consistently been impressed by their exhibitions at the show. Not only are their products of outstanding quality, but their team is also constantly innovating to bring something fresh and exciting to our guests.

“The Scottish Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Home Show celebrates flexible holiday-making for everyone, and the introduction of the new accessible lodge exemplifies true flexibility and inclusivity. As Scotland’s largest event of its kind, we are deeply committed to promoting inclusivity and hope the new lodge inspires others in the industry to prioritise it in their designs and exhibitions.

“Alongside the accessible lodge, this year’s show will feature a climbing wall and the return of our popular farmer’s market, filled with delicious local produce. It promises to be a fun-filled day of adventure for friends and family alike.”

The need for greater accessibility in the holiday home industry has long been evident, as many people with accessibility needs find it challenging to find holiday options which cater to them. Border Caravans’ accessible lodge aims to address this gap and spark a movement toward more inclusive designs across the sector.

Dale Gifford, Company Director at Border Caravans, said: “We believe this lodge is more than just a prototype—it’s the beginning of a shift toward creating spaces that truly welcome everyone.

“We are excited to bring this new option to the show for the very first time to coincide with our first year sponsoring the Scottish Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Home Show. We’ve attended the show for years as exhibitors so it’s great to be involved in such a meaningful way, and look forward to welcoming new and familiar faces from across the UK to the 2025 event.”

Border Caravans operate four award winning holiday parks throughout the Scottish Borders and stand proud as one of Scotland’s leading family-owned holiday park operators. Their parks, Lilliardsedge Holiday Park at Jedburgh, Westlands Country Park at Annan, Riverside Caravan Park at Hawick and Mouswald Lodge Park at Dumfries boast a wide offering including holiday homes for purchase and hot tub lodges for hire alongside bars, restaurants, live entertainment, a world class clay pigeon shooting ground, Fishing Lakes, Golf Course, tranquil surroundings and their very own music festival ensuring something for everyone. **Exploring the U.K. by Caravan: A Journey of Adventure and Freedom**

Caravanning in the U.K. is more than just a way to travel—it's a lifestyle, a chance to escape the daily grind and experience the country's stunning landscapes from the comfort of your own mobile home. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or new to the world of caravans, there’s something uniquely charming about hitting the open road and exploring the U.K. at your own pace. From scenic coastal routes to charming countryside retreats, the possibilities are endless. Here’s why caravanning in the U.K. should be at the top of your travel list.

### 1. **The Freedom to Explore**

One of the greatest joys of caravanning is the sense of freedom it offers. With your caravan, you can venture to places that might otherwise be out of reach, from remote countryside hideaways to picturesque seaside villages. You can wake up to the sound of the ocean in Cornwall, have lunch in a quaint Cotswold village, and end the day stargazing in the Scottish Highlands—all in the same trip.

The flexibility of caravanning also means you’re never locked into a rigid itinerary. If you find a spot you love, stay for another night. If you feel like exploring somewhere new, pack up and go. With over 500 caravan parks and campsites spread across the U.K., you’re never short of options when it comes to places to set up camp.

### 2. **A Perfect Way to See U.K. Nature**

The U.K. boasts a variety of stunning landscapes, from the rolling hills of the Lake District to the rugged coastlines of Wales. Caravanning allows you to experience these natural wonders up close. Imagine sipping your morning coffee while gazing at the misty peaks of Snowdonia or having a barbecue beside a serene lake in the Peak District.

Many campsites and caravan parks are situated in or near areas of natural beauty, making it easy to combine outdoor adventures with the comforts of home. Whether you're into hiking, cycling, fishing, or simply taking in the views, caravanning brings you closer to nature without compromising on convenience.

### 3. **Cost-Effective Travel**

Caravanning is often considered a more affordable way to travel, especially when compared to booking hotels or resorts. While there are upfront costs for purchasing or renting a caravan, once you have one, your accommodation is essentially sorted. Campsites are generally inexpensive, and many offer excellent facilities like electricity, Wi-Fi, and hot showers. You can also save money on food by cooking your own meals in the caravan kitchen.

For families, caravanning can be a particularly cost-effective way to travel, offering plenty of space for everyone without the high costs associated with hotels or dining out at every meal.

### 4. **A Family-Friendly Adventure**

Caravanning is an ideal way to travel with children. It gives families the chance to bond while exploring new places together. Most caravan parks cater to families, with kid-friendly amenities like playgrounds, bike rentals, and entertainment. Many also have close access to walking trails or beaches, making it easy to plan outdoor activities.

Caravans themselves are designed with comfort and practicality in mind. They often come with a range of features to make family life easier, from bunk beds for the kids to well-equipped kitchens for family meals. Plus, the flexibility of caravanning means you can easily take breaks and keep your travel routine flexible to suit your children’s needs.

### 5. **A Rich Variety of Campsites and Caravan Parks**

The U.K. is home to an impressive range of caravan parks, each offering a different experience. Whether you prefer something by the sea, nestled in the countryside, or close to a bustling city, there’s a site that fits your needs.

- **Coastal Campsites**: If you’re a fan of the sea, explore the beautiful beaches of Cornwall, Devon, or Norfolk. Many sites offer direct access to the beach, so you can spend your days surfing, swimming, or simply relaxing by the water.

- **Countryside Escapes**: The U.K. countryside is brimming with charming caravan parks. From the peaceful hills of the Lake District to the peaceful moors of Yorkshire, these sites offer a tranquil retreat into nature.

### 6. **Caravanning and Sustainability**

More and more travelers are looking for sustainable ways to explore the world, and caravanning is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Instead of flying to far-flung destinations, caravanning allows you to explore your own backyard while minimizing your environmental impact. Many caravan parks and campsites are embracing sustainability, with initiatives like recycling programs, solar-powered amenities, and eco-friendly facilities.

### 7. **The Best Time to Go**

The U.K. has a temperate climate, which means caravanning can be enjoyed year-round. However, the best time for caravanning generally depends on what you want to do. Summer (June to August) is the peak season, with long days and mild weather, making it ideal for outdoor activities. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are fantastic times to visit if you prefer fewer crowds and enjoy the beauty of changing seasons. Winter caravanning is possible too, particularly in coastal or southern areas, where the weather tends to be milder.

### 8. **Tips for a Successful Caravan Trip**

- **Plan Ahead**: While the freedom to go where the wind takes you is one of the joys of caravanning, it’s always wise to book campsites ahead of time, especially in peak seasons.

- **Check the Weather**: U.K. weather can be unpredictable, so always pack accordingly. A good waterproof jacket and some wellies can save the day in rainy conditions.

- **Keep It Tidy**: Many campsites have eco-friendly policies, so be sure to clean up after yourself and recycle whenever possible.

- **Know Your Limits**: If you're new to caravanning, start with short trips to get a feel for the vehicle and how it handles on the road. You'll soon get the hang of it.

### Conclusion

Caravanning in the U.K. offers an unbeatable combination of freedom, adventure, and comfort. Whether you're after a relaxing countryside escape, a family-friendly getaway, or an exciting outdoor adventure, the U.K.'s diverse landscape has something to offer everyone. With the right planning and a sense of adventure, caravanning can become one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the beautiful corners of the U.K. So, pack your bags, hit the road, and discover the magic of caravanning in the U.K.!

**Finding an Aire in the U.K.: A Guide to Convenient Motorhome Stopovers**

For motorhome and camper van enthusiasts, the concept of an *aire* (a designated motorhome stopover or parking area) is nothing new. Popular in many European countries, particularly France, aires are the perfect places to park up for the night without the hassle of booking a traditional campsite. They provide an easy, affordable, and convenient option for travelers on the move.

In the U.K., aires have slowly started to make their mark, offering motorhome and camper van users a way to stop, rest, and enjoy the journey without the expense or formality of staying in a full-service campsite. While the idea is still developing compared to mainland Europe, there are a growing number of aires and similar stopover locations across the country. So, how do you find an aire in the U.K. for your next adventure? Let’s explore!

### 1. **What is an Aire?**

An aire is typically a designated area for motorhomes and campervans to park overnight. Unlike traditional campsites, aires are generally basic, offering essential services like waste disposal, water refills, and sometimes electric hookups. They tend to be located in convenient locations like towns, scenic areas, or near tourist attractions, and are often free or available for a small fee. These sites are ideal for a short overnight stop or a brief rest during a road trip.

Aires in the U.K. are not as common as in other countries like France or Spain, but that doesn’t mean they’re hard to find. Many aires in the U.K. are found near coastal areas, towns, and rural landscapes, giving motorhome travelers access to the beauty and charm of the country without the need for extensive planning.

### 2. **How to Find Aires in the U.K.**

While the number of official aires in the U.K. is still growing, there are several resources and platforms that can help you locate these convenient stopovers:

#### **Apps and Websites**

There are a variety of apps and websites designed to help motorhome owners find aires and similar locations in the U.K.:

- **Park4Night**: This app is widely used across Europe, and it offers a wealth of information on motorhome stopovers, including aires, campsites, and other free parking spots. Users can share details about the locations, making it easier to find places with good reviews and up-to-date information.

- **CamperContact**: This popular app is aimed specifically at motorhome users and provides a comprehensive list of aires, parking spots, and campsites across the U.K. and beyond. It includes information about services available, user ratings, and the costs of staying at each location.

- **Search4Sites**: Another useful platform, Search4Sites allows you to search for free motorhome stopovers, aires, and campsites across the U.K. by location, price, and available services.

- **UK Motorhome Sites**: While not as expansive as European apps, this website offers a useful directory of motorhome stopovers, including aires, across the U.K.

#### **Local Tourist Information Centers** In some areas, local tourist information centers can be a valuable resource for finding overnight parking areas or aires. Many offer free or inexpensive parking for motorhomes, often in scenic or strategic locations.

#### **Look for Signs**

Many aires in the U.K. are not always listed on popular apps or websites, so keep an eye out for motorhome-specific parking signs as you travel through towns and rural areas. Particularly in coastal or popular tourist regions, councils are starting to designate areas for motorhome parking, even if they’re not officially branded as aires.

### 3. **Popular Areas for Aires in the U.K.**

Though still relatively limited compared to other European countries, you can find several key regions in the U.K. where aires and motorhome-friendly parking areas are becoming more common:

#### **Cornwall**

Cornwall is a top destination for motorhome and camper van enthusiasts due to its scenic coastlines, charming villages, and outdoor activities. The region has several free and paid parking areas that are motorhome-friendly, with many located close to beaches or picturesque towns. For example, the village of Polperro and places like St. Ives often have designated motorhome parking areas.

#### **The Lake District**

With its stunning lakes, mountains, and hiking trails, the Lake District is a motorhome haven. There are several locations where you can park for the night, and aires are becoming more common in this popular national park. Be sure to check out the areas around Ambleside, Keswick, and Windermere.

#### **Scotland’s Highlands and Islands** Scotland is one of the most motorhome-friendly regions of the U.K., with many aires and parking spots found in scenic locations. In addition to official aires, you’ll find wild camping spots and council-owned parking areas that allow overnight stays for motorhomes, particularly in the Highlands and along the coasts of popular destinations like Skye and the Isle of Mull.

#### **Wales**

Wales is another country where motorhome stopovers are becoming more common. You’ll find several coastal aires, particularly along the Pembrokeshire Coast and the Gower Peninsula. Many of these areas are free or cost just a small fee, offering a great option for those exploring Wales' national parks and rugged coastline.

#### **The South Coast**

Along the south coast of England, particularly in areas like Dorset, Devon, and Sussex, you’ll find a growing number of motorhome-friendly parking areas. Many seaside towns have recognized the value of catering to this growing demographic of travelers, offering aires and parking areas in picturesque locations close to beaches and attractions.

### 4. **What to Expect at U.K. Aires**

In general, aires in the U.K. are not as sophisticated as those in France or Spain, but they offer great value and convenience. Here’s what you can typically expect at a U.K. aire:

- **Basic Facilities**: Many aires provide a basic parking area with a nearby waste disposal point (for both grey water and chemical toilets), fresh water, and sometimes a place to dump rubbish.

- **Costs**: Some aires are completely free, while others charge a small fee (usually around £5 to £15 per night) for the use of facilities. Most charge by the night or sometimes for a 24-hour period.

- **Location**: Aires are often located near attractions, coastlines, or rural spots, so you’ll have access to some of the most beautiful areas of the U.K. Many of these stopovers allow easy access to local shops, restaurants, or hiking trails.

- **Electric Hookups**: While many aires in Europe offer electric hookups, this is less common in the U.K. You may find some sites with basic electricity, but it’s not the norm—be sure to check beforehand.

### 5. **Tips for Using Aires in the U.K.**

- **Check Availability**: Especially in busy seasons, make sure to check availability on apps like Park4Night or CamperContact before arriving. Some aires can fill up quickly during peak travel times.

- **Respect the Environment**: Many aires are in beautiful, natural settings, so be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles. Clean up after yourself, use designated bins, and be mindful of noise and other campers.

- **Know the Local Rules**: In some parts of the U.K., motorhome parking is only allowed for a specific period, or there may be time limits for free parking. Be sure to follow the posted signs to avoid fines.

### 6. **Looking Ahead: The Future of Aires in the U.K.**

While aires are still in the early stages of development in the U.K., the motorhome and camper van community is growing rapidly, and with it, the demand for more stopovers. As motorhome tourism continues to boom, local councils and private businesses are recognizing the potential for developing more aires to meet the needs of travelers.

With increased awareness and popularity, it’s likely that the number of aires across the U.K. will grow, making it easier than ever for motorhome enthusiasts to explore the country at their own pace.

Whether you’re looking for a short stopover on a long road trip or a convenient base for exploring the countryside, finding an aire in the U.K. is an excellent way to make the most of your motorhome experience. By using the right resources and keeping an eye out for new options, you’ll be able to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of exploring the U.K. in your motorhome.

**Winter Adventures in the U.K.: Exploring the Countryside in a Motorhome**

Winter in the U.K. can be a magical experience, especially when you take the road less traveled in a motorhome. The rolling hills, historical landmarks, and charming villages take on a different, often more tranquil, charm when the hustle and bustle of summer tourists fades away. If you’re seeking a unique, cosy way to explore the U.K. during the colder months, a motorhome could be the perfect solution. Here’s why winter motorhome travel in the U.K. is an experience worth having—and some tips on how to make the most of it.

### Why Winter in the U.K.?

The U.K. offers a variety of landscapes that are stunning year-round, but in winter, these settings often feel quieter, more serene, and sometimes even more beautiful. Imagine waking up to the misty edges of a Scottish loch or parking up beside a deserted beach in Cornwall, the sound of the surf the only thing breaking the silence. Winter is also a great time to visit places that are overcrowded in the summer, like Bath, the Lake District, or the Cotswolds. Without the throngs of tourists, you can take in the sights at your own pace.

Additionally, a motorhome gives you the freedom to chase the milder weather. You can start your journey in the south of England and gradually head north as temperatures drop or vice versa. Having your own space on the road means you have the flexibility to adapt to the weather and avoid the worst of the winter chill.

### Advantages of a Winter Motorhome Trip

1. **Freedom and Flexibility:** A motorhome offers a unique combination of accommodation and transport, making it easier to explore at your own pace. You’re not bound to fixed schedules or locations. If you see something interesting along the way, you can stop and take it in.

2. **Comfort in the Cold:** Winter camping doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. Modern motorhomes are equipped with central heating, double-glazed windows, and insulated walls, meaning you’ll stay warm and toasty even when the temperatures dip outside. Plus, having your own bathroom and kitchen ensures that you can avoid the coldest elements of camping, like shared facilities.

3. **Lower Costs:** Winter is off-season in the U.K., meaning many campsites, attractions, and even some hotels lower their prices. Motorhome hire prices are also generally cheaper in the colder months. With fewer crowds around, you can have more freedom without breaking the bank.

4. **Peace and Tranquility:** Whether you’re parked up near a forest in Scotland or on the edge of a quiet coastal village, winter offers solitude that’s hard to find in the summer months. The silence of an empty campsite surrounded by nature is a welcome contrast to the buzz of city life.

### Tips for Winter Motorhome Travel in the U.K.

1. **Check the Weather and Prepare Accordingly:** U.K. winters can be unpredictable. While southern regions like Cornwall and Devon tend to be milder, northern areas like Scotland can experience snow, icy roads, and freezing temperatures. Always check weather forecasts before you set off and pack appropriately. Bring extra warm clothing, waterproof gear, and snow chains for your motorhome if heading into more remote or higher-altitude areas.

2. **Book Campsites in Advance:** Not all campsites remain open in winter, so it’s a good idea to book ahead to ensure you’ll have a place to park. Some sites may offer winter-specific facilities, like heated showers or Wi-Fi, which could be an added bonus. Popular winter destinations like the Lake District and Snowdonia have campsites open year-round, but they may not always be fully serviced during the colder months.

3. **Maximise Heating Efficiency:** Keep the motorhome warm by using the heating system efficiently. Make sure your windows and doors are fully sealed to retain heat. You can also use extra blankets and insulated window covers to keep the cold at bay during the night.

4. **Keep an Eye on the Road Conditions:** Winter weather can bring icy roads, particularly in rural or elevated areas. Always make sure your motorhome is equipped with winter tires and that you’re comfortable driving in challenging conditions. Have a set of emergency supplies, including blankets, a first-aid kit, and extra food and water, just in case you encounter unexpected delays or weather disruptions.

5. **Explore Winter Activities:** Winter in the U.K. offers a unique set of outdoor activities. Many areas, such as the Scottish Highlands, offer winter sports like skiing or snowshoeing, while other regions like the Lake District are perfect for crisp winter walks. If you’re not a fan of the cold, there are plenty of indoor activities to enjoy too—from museum visits to cozy pub lunches.

6. **Embrace the U.K. Winter Traditions:** The U.K. is full of festive traditions and winter markets, especially in December. From the famous Christmas markets in Edinburgh and Bath to the cozy pubs that serve hearty fare, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to soak up the local culture and get a taste of seasonal cheer.

### Best Places to Visit in the Winter by Motorhome

- **Scottish Highlands:** If you’re a fan of dramatic landscapes, head north to the Scottish Highlands. With snow-capped mountains, frosty glens, and crystal-clear lochs, the winter scenery is nothing short of spectacular. The Cairngorms National Park, in particular, is a great spot for winter activities like skiing, but it’s equally stunning for a peaceful walk or wildlife spotting.

- **The Lake District:** While it’s a popular summer destination, the Lake District in winter feels like a peaceful retreat. The snow-dusted peaks, frozen lakes, and quiet villages make for a magical experience. The area is also home to cosy, dog-friendly pubs where you can warm up with a hearty meal after a day of exploring.

- **Cornwall:** If you prefer milder temperatures, Cornwall offers a beautiful winter retreat. With its rugged coastline, charming fishing villages, and dramatic cliffs, the region offers plenty of space to roam. Winter means fewer crowds, so you can take your time exploring places like St Ives or Land's End in peace.

- **Snowdonia National Park:** If you're after an adventure, head to Snowdonia in North Wales. Winter brings a different beauty to this mountainous region, with the snow highlighting the peaks and valleys. There are plenty of winter walks and the chance to enjoy some quiet moments by the fire in a local pub.

**Winter Caravan Storage in the U.K.: A Complete Guide for Protecting Your Caravan**

As winter approaches in the U.K., caravan owners face the annual task of preparing their beloved vehicles for the cold, wet months ahead. While caravanning is a fantastic way to explore the U.K. during the warmer seasons, the winter months can be harsh, with rain, snow, and freezing temperatures that can cause long-term damage if your caravan is not properly stored. Proper winter storage not only protects your investment but ensures that your caravan is ready to hit the road when spring arrives.

In this blog post, we’ll cover the best practices for winter caravan storage in the U.K., including the benefits of using a *CaSSOA*-approved storage site and how to prepare your caravan for hibernation.

### Why You Should Store Your Caravan in Winter

Winter weather in the U.K. can be unforgiving. Caravans left exposed to the elements face potential issues like:

- **Corrosion:** Prolonged exposure to rain, snow, and salt (from road gritting) can cause rust and corrosion to the chassis, wheels, and other metal parts.

- **Leaks and Damp:** Cold temperatures and increased rainfall can cause leaks and damp, which may lead to mold and mildew. This can damage interior fittings and fabrics, leaving unpleasant smells and potential health risks.

- **Pests:** Unused caravans can attract rodents or insects looking for a warm home during the colder months. If left unchecked, these pests can cause damage to upholstery and wiring.

- **Wear and Tear:** Freezing temperatures can cause rubber seals and pipes to become brittle, leading to cracks or leaks in the system when the caravan is brought out of storage.

- **Increased Cleaning and Maintenance Costs:** A caravan that’s stored outside without protection can accumulate dirt, leaves, and debris. This not only increases cleaning time when you pull it out for the next season but can also cause damage to surfaces and seals.

Storing your caravan safely over the winter months can prevent these issues and save you money on repairs in the long run.

### Where to Store Your Caravan in the Winter: CaSSOA Storage Sites

One of the best ways to ensure your caravan is stored safely during winter is by using a *CaSSOA*-approved storage facility. The *Caravan Storage Site Owners’ Association* (*CaSSOA*) is a recognised body that accredits storage sites based on their security and safety standards. These sites are often well-maintained and provide an ideal environment for keeping your caravan safe, secure, and in optimal condition during the off-season.

#### Benefits of Using a CaSSOA-Approved Site:

1. **Enhanced Security:** *CaSSOA*-approved sites are known for their high-security standards, which typically include CCTV monitoring, perimeter fencing, gated access, and sometimes 24-hour security personnel. This significantly reduces the risk of theft or vandalism, giving you peace of mind.

2. **Weather Protection:** These sites are typically designed to keep your caravan sheltered from the worst of the weather. Some offer covered or indoor storage options, which are ideal for protecting your vehicle from rain, snow, and wind. Even outdoor storage sites often offer hard-standing pitches, which reduce the risk of your caravan sinking into the ground or becoming bogged down in wet conditions.

3. **Insurance Benefits:** Many insurance companies offer discounts for caravans stored at *CaSSOA*-accredited sites because of the enhanced security and protection. This can lower your overall insurance premiums.

4. **Professional Handling:** *CaSSOA*-approved sites are usually run by professionals who understand the specific needs of caravan owners. This means that you can expect a high level of care and attention when it comes to maintaining the safety and security of your vehicle.

5. **Convenient Access:** Many *CaSSOA* sites are strategically located near popular caravaning regions or close to major transport links, meaning you can easily access your caravan when the weather improves and you’re ready to get back on the road.

Popular *CaSSOA*-accredited storage sites can be found across the U.K. and come in a range of options, including indoor storage, covered parking, and open-air parking. You can search for your nearest *CaSSOA* facility on their website and find the best solution for your needs.

### How to Prepare Your Caravan for Winter Storage

If you’ve decided to store your caravan at a *CaSSOA*-approved site or another secure location, there are still several steps you’ll need to take to prepare it for the winter months. Proper preparation can prevent damage and ensure that your caravan is ready to use as soon as you’re ready to hit the road again.

1. **Clean Your Caravan Thoroughly**

   - Wash the exterior to remove dirt, salt, and grime, paying special attention to the roof and wheels. Make sure the windows, awnings, and any other features are clean and dry before storing.

   - Clean and vacuum the interior, wiping down surfaces and ensuring there’s no food or rubbish left behind that could attract pests.

2. **Drain the Water System**

   - Drain the water tanks and lines to prevent freezing, as this can damage your plumbing and cause leaks when you next use the caravan. Leave taps open to ensure any remaining water can escape.

   - Don’t forget to empty the toilet cassette and clean it thoroughly.

3. **Check for Leaks and Seal Gaps**

   - Inspect the seals around doors, windows, and vents for any signs of wear or damage. Replace any worn seals to prevent water from getting inside the caravan.

   - It’s a good idea to check the roof for any signs of cracks or leaks, as these can become worse in winter if left unchecked.

4. **Protect the Battery**

   - If your caravan has a battery, either remove it for the winter and store it in a warm place, or ensure it’s fully charged and disconnected. This will help to prevent the battery from freezing or degrading during storage.

   - You can also consider using a solar charger or a battery-maintaining device if the caravan will remain in storage for an extended period.

5. **Use a Caravan Cover**

   - A good-quality, breathable caravan cover can protect your vehicle from dirt, rain, and snow. Just ensure the cover is well-fitted and allows airflow to avoid condensation buildup inside.

6. **Pest Control**

   - Use rodent deterrents such as traps, sprays, or even ultrasonic repellent devices to keep pests away. You can also block any small openings with steel wool to stop rodents from getting inside.

7. **Tyre Care**

   - If your caravan is stored outdoors, make sure the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure. Consider placing the caravan on jack stands to take the weight off the tyres if it will be stored for a prolonged period.

### Final Thoughts

Winter storage is an essential part of caravan ownership in the U.K., and the best way to ensure your vehicle stays in top condition is to choose a *CaSSOA*-approved storage site. These facilities offer enhanced security and weather protection, reducing the risk of damage and theft. With the right preparation, your caravan will be protected through the harshest winter months and ready for your next adventure when the sun comes out again.

By following these simple steps to prepare your caravan and choosing a secure, accredited storage site, you can rest easy knowing that your caravan is well cared for during the off-season. Happy caravanning!

**Must-Have Products for Caravan Safety: Keep Your Travels Secure and Worry-Free**

From protecting against theft to staying safe on the road and keeping your family comfortable inside, there are several products you should have in your caravan to ensure you’re well-prepared for any situation. Below, we’ve rounded up the essential caravan safety products that every caravanner should consider.

### 1. **Caravan Wheel Locks**

**Why You Need It:**

A caravan is a valuable investment, and leaving it unattended or exposed to theft is always a risk. Wheel locks are one of the most effective ways to prevent caravan theft, as they physically prevent the caravan from being moved.

- Giving you peace of mind knowing that opportunistic thieves can’t simply hitch it up and drive away.

**Recommended Products:**

- **The Club Wheel Lock:** Known for its robust design, the Club Lock is popular for caravans, motorhomes, and trailers.

Just like wheel locks, hitch locks prevent thieves from easily towing your caravan away. These locks secure the coupling mechanism and are an excellent deterrent.

- Locking the hitch when you’re leaving your caravan unattended.

- Ensuring the caravan remains connected to your towing vehicle at all times when in motion.

**Recommended Products:**

### 3. **Carbon Monoxide Detector**

**Why You Need It:**

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a silent and dangerous gas that can be emitted by gas appliances, heating systems, and even the towing vehicle if parked close to the caravan. A carbon monoxide detector will alert you to unsafe levels of CO in the air, allowing you to take action before it becomes life-threatening.

**Best For:**

- Protecting against undetected CO poisoning from gas appliances, cookers, or faulty ventilation.

- Keeping your family safe during winter months when heating systems may be in use.

### 4. **Fire Extinguisher**

**Why You Need It:**

Fires can break out quickly in a confined space like a caravan. Having a fire extinguisher on hand can make the difference between a minor incident and a full-blown disaster. It’s important to check the expiry date regularly and ensure you have the right type of extinguisher for different fire risks.

**Best For:**

- Addressing small fires before they escalate.

- Complying with safety regulations for caravaning, as some campsites may require fire extinguishers.

### 6. **Tow Mirror Extensions**

**Why You Need It:**

When towing a caravan, your vehicle’s mirrors might not give you a clear view of the road or traffic behind you. Tow mirror extensions are essential for ensuring you have good visibility, which is crucial for safety, particularly when changing lanes, parking, or reversing.

**Best For:**

- Improving rear visibility when towing.

- Making driving and parking easier and safer.

**Recommended Products:**

- **Milenco Aero 3 Tow Mirrors:** These mirrors are large, adjustable, and provide an excellent field of vision, making towing safer.

### 7. **Stabilizer and Anti-Sway Device**

**Why You Need It:**

A stabilizer or anti-sway device helps keep your caravan stable when towing, particularly in windy conditions or during sudden lane changes. This makes towing smoother and reduces the risk of accidents caused by swaying.

**Best For:**

- Reducing the risk of caravan sway and instability while towing.

- Ensuring a more comfortable and controlled driving experience.

**Recommended Products:**

- **Al-Ko AKS 3004 Stabilizer:** This stabilizer system is designed to reduce sway and improve safety by controlling any unwanted movement.

**Why You Need It:**

Car breakdowns can happen at the most inconvenient times, especially when you’re on a remote campsite or out on a long road trip. A caravan-specific breakdown kit includes tools and supplies that can help you get back on the road quickly, whether it’s fixing a puncture or making temporary repairs.

**Best For:**

- Preparing for emergencies on the road.

- Giving you the tools to make temporary fixes and avoid long delays.

### 9. **Water Filter and Purification System**

**Why You Need It:**

Clean, safe drinking water is essential for any caravan trip. While campsites may offer water hookups, you can’t always be sure about the quality of the water. A water filter ensures that the water you drink, cook with, and bathe in is free from contaminants.

**Best For:**

- Ensuring access to clean drinking water, especially on long trips or when staying in remote areas.

**Recommended Products:**

- **AquaCare Portable Water Filter:** Compact and effective, this filter removes chlorine, bacteria, and other impurities from your water supply.

### 10. **LED Road Safety Lights**

**Why You Need It:**

Visibility is key to road safety, especially when towing a caravan at night or in poor weather conditions. LED road safety lights can increase the visibility of your caravan, reducing the risk of accidents.

**Best For:**

- Improving visibility to other drivers when traveling in low light.

- Ensuring your caravan is seen by others, especially in foggy or rainy conditions.

**Recommended Products:**

- **Ring Automotive RBG10 LED Trailer Lights:** These lights are bright, durable, and easy to install, ensuring your caravan is visible from all angles.
